Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery
Hello all, well what a year.
First we were awarded the prestigious Green Flag award (one of only two in Charnwood I believe). Secondly the cemetery was awarded the top award from the National Cemetery awards – and thirdly I’m awarded the community heroes award, see picture above showing Ros with the Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE, amazing work when you consider their only three of us plus the groundsman who work tirelessly, to look after your loved ones. All the hard work is now done. We just have to maintain it.
If you feel you can spare half an hour to an hour whenever during the week to help us, please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150. Likewise, if you wish to hire the chapel or if you wish to donate and have a standard rose on the runways in memory of a loved one.
The Green Flag assessors suggested that we could find an area as a wildflower garden. We have designated an area at the back to the far right of the cemetery under the trees and surrounding the fountain and the bird tables.
At the last Amenities Committee meeting of the Syston Town Council the subject of the Tea Lights was raised. Following a report by the Leicestershire Fire Service, Fire Safety Officer, the committee decided that they would look again at the fire risk report as soon as it was possible with a view to reinstating the use of lighted tea light candles. I will keep you updated on this.
I was going to put a photo of the cemetery award on here but at the last minute I noticed a mistake so I’ll hopefully put it on next month.
Over the next few weeks we will be digging the ground over and making it ready to put the seeds in ready for next year.
Have a good month everybody
Ros.
