Keep Syston Tidy

It’s the little actions that help make the bigger ones possible!
If we all dispose of our waste from plastic bottles, sweet wrappers up to the big household items correctly we are all doing our bit to keep Syston Tidy and in return we keep our rivers clean and tidy too! As that is where carelessly discarded items end up!
From dropping litter near the brook in the centre of Syston to fly tipping down Mill Lane and Meadow Lane.
It can end up in our rivers and canals causing problems for wildlife and if not removed, it will continue down the river Soar which flows into the River Trent which in turn flows into the North sea! This then pollutes our seas and beyond.
So any small act we do to dispose of litter and rubbish correctly, we are in turn saving our planet!
It also makes a walk along our rivers and canals much more enjoyable without all the detritus.
The pictures below were taken in October this year and show a huge build up of rubbish in the Canal near Syston Lock!
It included plastic bottles, trees, and a large fridge or fridge freezer! If all this waste had been disposed of correctly the rivers and canals in our area wouldn’t look like this.
The Environment Agency has just desilted the Barkby Brook through the centre of Syston, so to keep this watercourse flowing through and to help prevent future flooding to residents, see images of before and after the desilt below.
Please think before you drop litter! There are waste bins throughout Syston. If you are not near one, keep your litter with you until you are or take it home and put in the appropriate waste bin there!
If you have large items to dispose of Charnwood Borough Council provide a collection scheme see details on their website: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/special_collections
If you use someone to take your waste away make sure they are registered, a registered collector will be happy to show you their licence. If they aren’t then use someone else, otherwise you could face a fine.
Please Keep Syston Tidy!
