HATS Delightful ‘Donuts’
HATS (Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society) production of ‘Donuts for the Depressed’ by HE Hubler with permission from Stage Scripts, proved to be a resounding success.
The audience were treated to a host of hilarious events during the journey of bumbling Edwin trying so hard to please his beloved Agnes. In order for Edwin to get Agnes’ fathers (Walter) permission to marry, Agnes ordered Edwin and her friend Clark to kidnap her grandmother and then rescue her knowing that Walter would be indebted to having her back and agree to their marriage.
Everything went wrong of course. From charity functions that saw the attendees eating grass and mud-covered Donuts, to singing Butlers, and a grandmother that was sweet, but deemed to be a menace.
Edwin and Clark’s efforts went repeatedly wrong. In total they managed to kidnap nine people, hiding them in the garden shed and various other places. Trolleys and wheelbarrows appeared with bodies too.
In an effort to try and convince the ‘kidnapped’ that nothing untoward had happened, a therapy session was held, and they were ultimately told that they had all had fallen asleep and had been dreaming.
Agnes’ grandmother was never kidnapped, and her father gave permission for Agnes and Edwin to marry.
Our fabulous audiences laughed throughout, and left the venue feeling very entertained, however, quite a few said they would not be venturing into their garden sheds any time soon.
Comments included the following:
Helen said: “thoroughly fantastic enjoyed every moment”.
