Wreake Valley Rotary Club Presentation Evening

On Monday 30th June the Stn was invited to the above evening.
The room was filled with the recipients from 25 charities or groups of the money raised over the past year by the fundraising conducted by the group. Our photograph above and below right shows some of the representatives with Nigel Coleman President of Wreake Valley Rotary Club.
These groups included: Timeless Connections Cafe, Birstall Pay it Forward, Liv Standford & Canine Companions, Soar Valley Outreach, Kate Williams (Autism), Waterside Canoe Club, Syston Sailing Club Syston Station Adopters, Rotary Foundation, Air Ambulance Leicestershire, Shelter Box, Bark Foundation (Cameroon Orphanage), Cedar Care, Prostaid, Age Concern Syston, Thrummy Drummer Dementia Group, Rainbows, Mary’s Meals, Intercare, Life Education, Babyloss Support Leicester, Syston Community Flood Group, Rearsby School Books and Wreake Valley Academy Drama.
All of the above were very grateful for the donations received and some explained what they do and what the money would be used for. Miss T from Wreake Valley Academy Drama said that the donation will go towards seven students attending a summer school to help them progress in Drama. Others said they would use the money for specific needs or group trips.
Within the evening the Alan Morley award for service above Self was awarded to Syston Community Flood Wardens for their dedication to helping residents during the floods in Syston from 2023 to 2025. In presenting this award David Fox explained that Maxwell Nugent, Ree Nugent and Tim Lewin had been either checking the levels of the brook during the night, since the flood in October 2023 or knocking on residents doors from 6am on the days of the flood in January 2024 and 2025, as well as remaining to help residents for over 15 hours on the day of the floods. He also explained that Ree while out helping people received a call from a family member to say her own home was being flooded and so she had to go and sort her own home out.
He said that these volunteers showed a significant contribution to the community during those times, so the group felt they deserved to be recognised for putting service before self.
Our photograph above left shows L-R: Ree Nugent, Tim Lewin, President Nigel Coleman and David Fox. They received a certificate, cup and a cheque, which they have donated to the Syston Community Flood Group, shown below with Janette are Ree, Tim and Nigel, to buy more equipment to keep the brook clear and help alleviate any future flooding.
The certificate states: Alan Morley Service Above Self Award, awarded to Syston Community Flood Wardens with grateful thanks from all Syston Residents affected by flooding.
They keep the cup for a year.
