Minister Visits Syston

Emma Hardy MP the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Flooding and Water since July 2024 visited a resident at his home on College Road, Syston together with Edward Argar MP, Councillor James Poland and employees of Aviva Insurance.
She was there to find out how the Flood Re insurance scheme (Build Back Better) was working on the ground. The resident was able to tell her what happened in the flood in January 2025, he had only moved in a few weeks before so it was a shock to find his new home under water. He had nothing but praise for the way Aviva and the contractors had dealt with his claim, he was fortunate that he has a daughter who had worked in the insurance industry and she helped him throughout.
We are aware that some residents have not had a good experience dealing with the loss adjusters and contractors and informed the delegation of some of the problems. Emma Hardy is very keen to make sure that everyone is aware of the Flood Re (Build Back Better) insurance scheme and that it works for them. She is looking at the possibility of talking to some of those affected to see what went wrong and how it could be improved.
Although this meeting was set up to talk about the insurance scheme the resident was able to tell the delegation the problems this area has with blocked drains and the extra strain being put onto the drainage systems due to the new housing that had been and is still being built in the area. We endorsed this and spoke about the planning application from Taylor Wimpey and the problems we have found over the past few years.
We feel that this Minister and our MP can make a difference given the chance.
