New Barkby WI

Dawn Haynes, President, welcomed everyone to New Barkby’s March meeting
‘Jerusalem’ was sung, then members and visitors heard a talk from James Craven, ‘My Life as a Perfume’.
Now retired, he regaled everyone with his experiences to help customers test out different fragrances (usually on a wrist) to choose a favourite one.
‘The smell’ has evolved over millions of years, reaching up from the nostrils to the brain. The word perfume has its association with smoke and fires some personal choices have been connected to the smell of ‘jugged hare’ or the reminder of a ‘winning racehorse’.
James worked for several department stores during his career and so many stories of personal preferences were told about individual likes and dislikes. There was a question and answer period afterwards.
The vote of thanks was given by Angela Montague.
The competition for ;a favourite perfume’ was won by Janice Bond with ‘Red Door’ by Elizabeth Arden.
The raffle prize was won by Gillian Weston.
After the talk, business matters were dealt with.
The date of the next meeting will be Wednesday 1st April, Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm.
This will be a Craft Evening with Janet Kirk on ‘box making’.
Visitors are always welcome to attend.
