Progress on the Brook Maintenance Schedule
Back in the middle of February, a joint inspection / survey of the lower parts of Barkby Brook was carried between Environment Agency inspector and members of Syston Town Council (STC).This involved walking the length of the brook from its outlet to the river Wreake right up to Memorial Park. Many items in need of remedial work to clear silt, debris and trees were recorded. Since then, a comprehensive report of work to be carried out to complete this project has been received at the council offices.
Councillor Phil Knight who attended the inspection walk along with Neil Skinner the STC Premises officer, has been pressing for this part of the brook to be included in the de-silting works that were carried in the central stretch of the brook last year said,
“I am very pleased that the Environment Agency have listened to our calls for the second part of the clearance works to the brook have been heeded. It has always seemed obvious to me that the whole of the brook needed the same type of work as that carried out to earlier to the central stretch. Restrictions to the flow of water downstream are bound to cause a build-up in the upper parts of the brook leading to a much higher risk of flooding to properties in that area.”
According to the EA, the works are due to be carried out in the Summer / Autumn this year.
