U3A Syston And District
We are seeing signs of Spring with bulbs flowering, leaves showing on trees and shrubs and perhaps even some Spring cleaning!! Yes, well we’ll see. Life too offers us some new beginnings including our U3A organisation.
There are new groups added for our members plus some suggestions for additional interest too. For a full update of current options and information visit the U3A website https://www.systonu3a.org.uk. We also have a video posting on YouTube – Have a look. Visit our monthly meeting at Syston Community Centre 10am-12pm on third Wednesday of each month for a welcoming chat before joining.
The new Cross Stitch group has vacancies for the creative amongst you. Never done Cross Stitch before? No problem, Gwyn has been enjoying this form of counted thread embroidery for decades and offers expertise, support and materials to have or borrow. Cross Stitch is thousands of years old and some of the earliest fragments are from 6-7th century Egypt and became very popular in China during 618-907AD before spreading to Europe and was widely used in the Middle Ages. Cross Stitch may be used decoratively but more widely viewed as recreating images
This shows Gwyn’s achievements but Cross Stitch IS beginner friendly and easy to use fabric and kits are available. Creativity is gender neutral and if you can count you can produce something wonderful so come along lads and have a go with your wife, partner, girlfriend who cares. More details are on our website.
Considering a therapy for high speed modern living? The U3A has it! Come and join our Bridge group and relax. Benefits also include exercising your mind, partner play and a fascinating, stimulating pastime. Bridge is reputed to have been invented by British soldiers in 1853-56, There is also a game called Khedive which appeared in Constantinople in 1870 becoming very popular on the French Riviera. In 1887 it reached London and became known as Russian Whist or Bridge Whist as we would know it. In 1893 it was being played in New York and later in London by 1894. In 1900 it was a very popular mixed sex pastime. Whilst it is a card game it is much more than counting and numbers and more about card suits, psychology, bluff, communication, strategy and logic. Sounds like YOU or could be YOU? Find out and contact Ann the Group Organiser to chat.
Details on U3A website or come along to our monthly Speaker meeting (details as above).
Tai Chi group also began this year and continues to flourish. There are no vacancies at the moment but no waiting list either, so IF you are interested in Tai Chi when any place becomes vacant, please make contact and be on the waiting list.
