National Garden Scheme Open Gardens for August in and around Syston
There are some lovely gardens open in the area with plenty of summer colour on display. Entrance fees for the gardens are modest and children are admitted free. There is home-made tea and cakes on sale to enjoy whilst relaxing in the gardens. Every visits adds to the donations which the NGS makes annually to nursing and cancer charities, such as Macmillan Cancer support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK.
There are 16 gardens open within 25 miles of Syston, and four within just 15 miles of Syston
Known as the Haven, on the 3rd – 11th August, 221 Markfield Road near Groby (LE6 0FT) opens its garden. There are wooded areas of mature shrubs and trees and the garden is bordered by Slate Brook. A natural pond has been formed out of the brook which is fringed with an abundance of water marginals. In addition, there is a beautiful pergola displaying flowers and hanging baskets.
This garden is south facing garden with views and flanked by Martinshaw Woods.
221 Markfield Road
If you enjoy container gardening a visit to Piecemeal near Loughborough (LE12 5PE) will not disappoint. It is opening on the 18th August displaying over 400 pots containing many different types of shrubs and plants. This is a garden full of interesting and unusual plants, densely displayed including shrubs and some small trees.
At Bruntingthorpe (LE17 5QF), pictured below, The Firs garden opens on the 11th August with 1.5 acres laid out around a Victorian Villa with views over the open countryside. There are sweeping lawns, mature trees, interesting and colour themed planting with artefacts and sculptures. There are numerous seating areas to relax and enjoy the garden.
Over towards Melton Mowbray (LE13 0BQ) Tresillian House opens on the 25th August. The garden is three quarters of an acre with many mature trees including beautiful blue cedar trees, and an excellent specimen tulip tree. There is unusual planting together with a bog garden, a natural pond and a Koi pond added in 2015. This is a larger garden which provides a calm, tranquil oasis for a relaxing visit.
