Syston Scout Group – Band News

Syston Scout & Guide Band have been very busy since the start of the summer. We entered our first competition since being promoted to National Class within TYMBA (Traditional Youth Marching Band Association). The competition was held as part of the Armed Forces Day at Himley Hall, Dudley, which was a very hard and emotional day for the band, as it was the first time competing since the passing of our great friend, David Lucas. We went out to perform in Dave’s honour and do a performance to make him proud. We came 2nd and won a few trophies.
In August we led the parade for Mountsorrel Revival and did 2 performances during the day. A couple of weeks later, we had the privilege in opening the Syston Summer Fayre playing on the stage to start the event off.
Next for the band were the final 2 competitions of the season, which were both with a new type of banding organisation to us; BYBA (British Youth Band Association). This offered a different experience to us as it wasn’t what we were used to but we did well. The first contest we came 2nd winning a couple of trophies, then for the final contest which was the association’s National Finals we came 3rd and were placed 3rd in the League.
Not a bad competing year in the top classes in both organisations, but plenty to build on for next year.
The next events for the band are to take part in the Burgess Hill Tattoo in Essex with other bands from across the country and then the London Lord Mayors Show with The Corps of Drums Society.
Planning has started for next years Sticks & Tones show which will be held at Wreake Valley Theatre on Saturday 22nd February; ticket details will be announced very soon.
