Leicestershire Speakers – October Meeting
Our October opened with tributes being paid to Anne Jones who sadly passed away in September after an illness bravely borne. Anne was a founder member and for many years secretary of Leicestershire Speakers; a consummate speaker always willing to give advice and encouragement to help inexperienced members feel comfortable and build their confidence. She was truly professional and will be greatly missed by ‘Speakers’.
We listened to three speeches during the evening, all three were excellently delivered the most outstanding was Rick Middleton’s speech about the industry of branding of products and its complexities; Rick was awarded the Star of the Month. Ramblings was the title of Wyn Glen’s speech and this led us from the mountain sides of Austrian mountains to constructing water features from re-circled materials. During Val Christie’s speech we heard the Helm wind is the only named wind in the British Isles.
For the second part of our programme John Baron organised a Leicestershire Speakers style ‘Room 101’. Everyone arrived with a slip of paper on which was written what they felt should be relegated to Room 101. As you can imagine everyone had rehearsed their justification for sending their pet hate to Room 101. What a surprise! John duped us asking that slips be put into the hat and random choices made. After listening to all pleas, the adjudicator decided that drivers who disobey 20 mile speed restrictions should be dispatched forthwith to Room 101!
The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring Bev Capewell on 0116 277 0266 or visit our website www.leicspeakers.co.uk. We can also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.
