VE Day events cancelled

Events due to take place in Loughborough to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day have been cancelled.

The borough council had started to plan a programme of events which would take place in the town centre on Friday 8th May to mark 75 years since the end of World War Two.

However in line with national government guidance, the Council has decided to cancel the events.

There are hopes a celebration will be held later in the year and the Council will continue to review and follow national guidance.

Cllr Hilary Fryer, the Council’s Armed Forces champion said: “Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic we’ve decided to cancel events due to take place for the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

“Clearly this is disappointing but we would encourage people to still commemorate the occasion from the comfort of their home and pay tribute to the Second World War generation.

“We’re in close contact with partners and if there is an opportunity to mark the anniversary later in the year then we will do.”
