Coronavirus Vaccine
It was announced on 2nd December 2020 that the Government has accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer/BioNTech’s Coronavirus vaccine for use.
The vaccine is typically delivered by a simple injection in the upper arm. Two doses of the vaccine are required, three weeks apart, to achieve protection against coronavirus.
Patients will be contacted to book their vaccination when their turn comes and will be advised where to go. Patients are asked not to contact their GP practice or the hospital enquiring about the vaccine.
Vaccines in hospitals
On Saturday 12th December 2020 the first vaccines began to be delivered to patients and health and social care staff in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland via a Hospital Hub at Leicester’s General Hospital. Immediate priority is being given to patients aged over 80 who are already attending hospital as an outpatient or being discharged home after a hospital stay, along with NHS and care home staff considered to be at the greatest risk from the disease.
Vaccines in GP practices
On 15th December the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland clinical commissioning groups announced the start of the vaccination programme in GP-led vaccination centres.
Some vaccinations will take place on GP practice premises and others will be at community vaccination centres, for example in council buildings.
Nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and other NHS staff are working alongside GPs to vaccinate those aged 80 and over, as well as care home workers and residents, identified as priority groups for the life-saving vaccine.
Vaccinations will be administered by groups of GP practices, known as primary care networks, with one practice generally providing vaccines on behalf of all practices in the group.
Vaccinations are now available at the Syston GP practices: Melton, Syston and Vale Primary Care Network (at Melton Sports Village, Burton Road, Melton Mowbray)

From week ending 15th January, all 132 GP practices across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) will be providing either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccinations to all eligible patients through their local primary care network (PCN).
Please don’t contact the centres for your vaccination, you will be contacted by them when they are able to offer you the vaccine.
Until then please Stay Safe.
