From Social Distancing to Social Gathering by Ineke Doesburg
Broadway Gospel Hall
Family service followed by tea
I might not be a religious person, but I am a very curious one and the Broadway Gospel Hall has always intrigued me. I blame Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act. I decided to visit this gathering which they call a family service, and if I’d enjoy it, I would stay for tea as well.
A bit undecided I stepped into the Gospel Hall, not knowing what to expect. But as soon as I stepped inside, I felt incredibly welcome. I was given a song and hymns book as well as The Holy Bible which we used during the service. The lady next to me helped me along to find the right passages because the book did not have page numbers. Even though I struggled to keep up, I never felt uneasy.
There was such a lovely atmosphere, with young children playing between the seats and everybody being engaged in what was said by the speakers. I really enjoyed the speakers bringing the scriptures alive by placing them in the current world and making bridges to everyday situations. The prayers were alternated by chats and hymns. But not like the music we know from Sister Act, and that confused me.
During tea, which I obviously stayed for because I really wanted to talk to these like-minded individuals, I asked them about their and my idea of gospel. It was explained to me that gospel means good news, possibly derived from old English, and that their gatherings are about good news, although the focus might be on sin there is a remedy for that, salvation. This makes their faith a levelled playing field which is accessible to everyone. I understand what they are saying because this is the feeling I had during the whole gathering.
No matter where you are from in life, you are welcome. This winter they will heat the church and welcome everyone who needs a warm shelter.
The Broadway Gospel Hall seems to be a lot greater than just a church, it’s a community open to everyone whether you are religious or not.
