Syston Rugby Club -A successful season for the first XV and other teams
Glorious sunshine awaited Huddersfield RUFC as they arrived for the Semi-final of the Papa John Cup Regional 1 Championship.
A good crowd arrived early to make the most of the weather, with estimates of between 400 and 500 spectators the bar was doing a roaring trade, along with a posh pizza van making a very pleasant look and feel to the ground while watching a warm-up to help calm the nervous before KO.
The commitment shown from all the Syston players was immense, the ball carrying into heavy tackles and then lightning quick ruck clearouts of much bigger opposition was a testimony of both their commitment and the coaching skills of Alex White and his fellow coaches, however our usual patterns and strike runners were getting shut down and turned back inside not allowing our outside backs to find space.
To go all season unbeaten in the Midlands Division 1 and win the Leicestershire County Cup at Tigers under lights was a fantastic achievement.
I hope they are not too disappointed and remember what they have achieved this year!!!

Congratulations Huddersfield and the best of luck in the final. A fantastic game with both sides giving their all which saw Huddersfield winning 25-29. This brings an end to our first XV’s season and what a fabulous season it has been. Undefeated in the league promoted to National League 2 as champions. Leicestershire county cup champions. Our only loss today to Huddersfield. The club could not be prouder of you all. A great turnout!
Huge thanks to Alex White our Head of Rugby, our coaching team, players, supporters and our amazing sponsors.
Other successes for the club include:
Syston second XV also won their league, undefeated all season and now gain promotion. The third team were 2nd in their league and the 4th team were fourth in their league. So a brilliant result all round.
Both the first and second team won their respective county cup finals.
U16’s won the county cup,
U10’s won the Prima Cup (playing at Welford Road), pictured below.
U15’s were runners up for the county cup.
U17’s drew the county cup final.
We are starting girl’s rugby at Syston next season – a massive step forward for the club.
Well done to the players and coaching team for a fantastic performance across the competition and their families and friends for supporting.
