Dear Editor,
Increased Council Tax for Syston Town Council
I am writing to make residents aware that Syston Town Council (STC) is charging more council tax than the borough council and if STC can explain why for the last few years this is the case when the responsibilities for STC are considerably less than that of Charnwood Borough Council (CBC).
I understand that STC are responsible for the maintenance of five public parks, five football pitches, two cemeteries, the sports pavilion on memorial park, a skate park and BMX track, buildings on the cemeteries and the community centre. Staff costs seem to take up the majority of the STCs precept even though staff has reduced, they currently employ 13 people, eight are full time, one has a dual role when in 2024/25 they had 16 employees. CBC has a much wider responsibility and serves the residents by providing Waste and Recycling: Managing bin collections and recycling services.
Council Tax: Billing and collecting council tax.
Planning and Development: Handling planning applications and local development frameworks in the area.
Housing: Dealing with housing needs, benefits, and homelessness.
Environmental Health: Ensuring food safety, pollution control, and public health.
Electoral Services: Managing elections for the borough. Source CBC website.
So why are STC increasing its proportion of the council tax by more the CBC when they don’t provide as much as CBC it appears to be disproportionate.
A concerned resident
