In November 2019, encouraged by my husband John, I signed up to ‘The Channel Belles’, a group of 14 ladies ranging in ages from 30-61, to form three relay teams with the ambition of swimming across the English Channel in June 2021.
The start date is fast approaching. Qualifying sea swims have been completed, two winters of cold water acclimatisation have been accomplished, boat training has taken place and team kit has arrived, but unfortunately John will not be able to wave us off from the start line as he very sadly passed away in March of this year at the age of 60, following a short battle with cancer.
John, pictured right, grew up in Queniborough, was in the first cohort of students to attend Wreake Valley College and lived over 30 years of his adult life in Syston. Whenever he ventured into Syston he always met someone he knew as he had played cricket for Syston for nearly 50 years and had also been a member of Syston Rugby Club.
Jose, pictured above, will now be swimming my Channel Relay leg in John’s memory to raise money for LOROS, Macmillan Cancer Support and The Alzheimer’s Society. If you would like to donate to these three good causes in memory of John please visit my charity page. https://virginmoneygiving.com/JoseMills
