Edward Argar MP for Charnwood

I hope that readers of the Syston Town News had a happy and peaceful Christmas, and my very best wishes for 2023. As life has got back in to its normal rhythm, after the Christmas/ New Year pause, so too has work on some local issues that impact directly on Syston.
A few updates from December – It was a busy month for me out and about in Syston before Christmas, when I had the pleasure of officially opening the St Peter and St Paul’s Church Christmas Cafe, and formally presenting a cheque from the National Lottery Community Fund for £10,000 which the volunteer team at the Church and Church Hall had secured for a new boiler and for ceiling insulation in the Church Hall. The hall plays a hugely important role in Syston town life, hosting multiple community groups, social events, and other functions that help bring the community together so it was great to be able to congratulate in person the team, particularly Janet Kidner, who’d secured the funding for these improvements which make a huge difference to the hall.
I was also able to pay a visit to Wreake Valley Academy before Christmas to meet with students, get an update on the academy’s progress and plans for the future from the Headteacher Tim Marston, and to discuss funding for local schools.
On other local matters, I have also taken up with CrossCountry Trains my campaign to try to secure Syston as an additional stop on the Leicester to Melton train service. At the moment the service goes direct from Leicester to Melton, and beyond, but despite passing through Syston station, it currently doesn’t stop there. I have asked CrossCountry to set out any legal, technical or other barriers to the trains being able to make the additional stop in Syston, to see if there is a way they can be overcome and an additional stop added. Such a stop in Syston would help improve the town’s links with Melton and beyond, and be a significant improvement to local public transport routes. I will keep STN readers updated on any developments.
As ever, should you feel I may be able to be of any assistance to you as Syston’s local MP, please do feel free to write to me at: Rt Hon Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, or by email to: edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk
