New Barkby WI

President, Dawn Haynes, welcomed members to New Barkby’s April meeting, the first of the new year 2026/27.
Jesuralem was sung, then there was a welcome to Janet Kirk, from Barkby & Beeby W.I.
She became our instructor for the evening, as everyone became a ‘Bag Lady’ creating bags in different sizes, using a variety of patterned wrapping paper, to make gift bags during the craft session.
The vote of Thanks was given by Jean Brutnall.
Following on, members enjoyed social time with refreshments, before the business part of the evening.
There was a report from Alma Wright on the recent Federation’s Annual Council Meeting. Attendees heard from Charity ‘Heatwize’ about community heart screening and defibrillators, Mike Kapur and his role as the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire. The afternoon speakers was Adam Henson, a well-known farmer and broadcaster who is frequently seen on BBC TV’s ‘Countryfile’ programme the gave his account of his career in farming and television work.
New Barkby’s business was then discussed.
The competition for a ‘Favourite
Jewellery box’ was won by Dawn
Haynes. The raffle prize won by Julie Blackwell was an Easter egg and a plant.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 6th May, 7.30pm at Syston Community Centre, with our ‘Resolutions’ meeting, followed by a Bring and Share refreshments.
