From Social Distancing, to Social Gathering – Swimming lessons for adults
Although we live on an island, I have noticed that a lot of people do not feel confident in the water. Some have never learned to swim or have lost the ability to do a certain stroke properly.
Whatever their reasons, the lovely swim teachers of our local pool offer lessons for all different stages and ages! So even if you know how to swim, but like me have lost the ability to dive, you can join the improvement swimmers’ group but maybe you are more like Wilaiporn and would like to learn to swim and start at the very beginning. It is all possible.
But how does that work?
Let me take you into the South Charnwood Leisure Centre where Natalie gives us a warm welcome at the desk. She lets us in, and we get changed in the locker room. After a quick shower, it’s time to enter the pool. The pool is divided into areas with different depths and depending on your level, that is where you go.
A lifeguard is present to keep an eye on us.
The beginners start at the shallow end and the swim teacher is already in the water with the group.
We find the improvers group in the deep end and in between are the intermediates.
“I couldn’t swim, and I didn’t know anyone, but now I have friends and fun while learning to swim!” Wilaiporn, 43 years
Swim activities seem to spread to all corners of the pool, and every group is supportive of each other. I hear exciting giggling when a group is motivated to jump into the deep end.
Some dare to jump by themselves, others prefer to hold the hand of their teacher. It’s all good because every single one of them is making progress with either their ability to swim, float or just feel more confident in the water.
